Tips for building my first route Empty Tips for building my first route

Post by Damian John Wit Fri May 11, 2012 1:18 pm

I want to create a OpenBVE/BVE 4 route by hand in CSV. Could anyone give some tips or suggestions and also tell me what would be required in order to do this? (like a set of objects)
I've read the How to create a route in CSV! Part 1 and 2 by ipaclansite of BVEStation and Route Building guide by Dennis Lance already by now, do I need to read something else or should I proceed to start coding?

The 2 guides you mentioned should be enough already.

Get coding Very Happy

Out of curiosity is it a fictional or non fictional route?

Learn what type of format you wish to go for, .csv or .b3d Razz if you don't fully understand either file, or where to start from get them here

Hello there!

Well, I'm faily new to all this myself, and well I started after reading Dennis Lance's tutorial, however the only other thing I'd say is to read/print the .csv route refrence for OpenBVE, however I cannot find it anywhere (Lost my printed copy and I want to refer to it right now myself!).

Also, you can use other people's objects (dont forget to check the licences), however many people on here I'm sure will encourage you to build your own objects too (somthing I suffer todo).

And if your intrested, my route thread:

I'd be going for .CSV

Yep, also from Sydney.

Learning object building will also be a good choice however Bruce's advice is also very useful.

Also heres one of my current work in progress productions if interested.

I want to really expand the Australian content for BVE. But the problem lies in the fact that there's not much of objects available.

I encountered that when I first started my route. Got over that hurdle easily by building my own stuff.

What I can't get over is the weird stares I get when photographing the ground, garbage bins etc etc for textures Laughing

@RachelBerryFan47: My sentiments exactly. Wink

So folks, expect I'm started on coding in Notepad++ and started collecting objects and stuff etc., and I'll be updating my progress (With photos ) whenever I get free time (obviously on the weekends where there's no work hopefully)...
It'll be a English fictional route (name undecided, will be taken at the end of development) but might take a long time to collect objects.

Thanks guys for your suggestions, further suggestions are welcome, Very Happy

BTW, I'm having serious difficulties registering into BVEStation Forums, if anyone could lend a hand, it'd be great. Thanks.

Well, if you want to learn coding, you could probably have a look to the "College of Knowledge", where links to a few tutorials can be found...

You can start coding a simple route without needing much in the way of objects. Get some practise in before you begin anything a bit more ambitious. Following Denis Lance's tutorial is the best way, I found. It worked for me at least.
You DO need to become adept at object making if you hope to make a really satisfying route.
I find the .b3d format quickest and tidiest for objects. Though it really makes little difference, you can reference both in the route structure namespace.

What I can't get over is the weird stares I get when photographing the ground, garbage bins etc etc for textures
Maybe we should get some special T-shirts, have "If found please return to the local asylum" printed on them Very Happy

If it's not straightforward to join it ain't worth joining. Obviously pitched at the average US citizen rather than a global membership. I did register ages ago, and found little of interest there. The only reason I bothered at all at all was to promote Ballyfeckin to the poor 'aul paddies who emigrated!! Which they're doin' all over again now cos we're busted!

Well, I guess the solution will be found sooner rather than later - some guys from BVE Station are also registered here, so maybe they'll give you a clue.

There was a new registration system in place due to spambots.

I am registered on there as well under the same name but as I registered before the new changes I am unable to help. However Dj Hammers or Chris[CT1660] could be of assistance to you.

Perhaps you can try my Route Editor for route editing than Notepad++. It has (almost) complete syntax highlighting which is somehow better than no syntax highlighting at all.
