Correct me if I am wrong but a Portal is basically a gateway to further exploration

That's quite right, and at present we enter the site via the home page, not the portal. It's not a matter of "being thick yet again**", but I think you may have easily have missed Derryck's explanation earlier (it's a long thread) for technical reasons why that's so at present.

a portal, a path to other "things" derricks portal completes this statement (no matter how small a portal) bitching about things is stupid. but member not liking things on here because its not like bve-t etc... why? change does WORK. im sick of everyone trying to attempt another BVE-T its not going to happen. its gone. with all the s**t that happened towards the end im kinda glad to see the back of it.

(going off topic now) the chat box! don't get me started! what a stupid thing that is!! please correct me if im wrong but to date there hasn't being a proper conversation on there. i think to be honest to put that to one side until new year. the amount of users don't really make it a workable implementation!

the portal on the other hand is working. even with all the bitching about it i can guarantee all have clicked that link more than once. i for one will make sure the portal will have news about my releases (mayybe a good suggestion here, having a little announcement section for newly released objects trains etc...) before both my posts and my site. thats when things like a portal start to be used.

I think you're right on the chatbox issue, MrK. It doesn't seem to have taken off, at least not yet. No doubt Derryck will monitor the usage and decide whether it is "earning its keep", before deciding if it stays (and I give it the "thumbs down").
It's not easy with any of the template type forums (which is all of them as far as I can see) to radically change the design and navigation. Derryck is tied to certain constraints by the format and is not free to implement everything and anything in the same way as MrK, graymac, or any of our other devs can on their own freestyle sites. A certain degree of compromise is inevitable. The portal page here is not precisely a functional portal in the true sense of the word, but it will become a useful starting point for further exploration of selected features even if it isn't the first page users are directed to. Probably if it had been called "Features" (for example) right from the start the pedants wouldn't have said a word (and I own up to 'guilty' on that count). Irrespective of what is is called let's see how it shapes up. There's nothing on there not to like, and the statistics at the sides are interesting to see.

It's surely not too much to ask to log in, if that's what it takes to use the facility, if it isn't worth the effort that really says it all and there's certainly no point in retaining the thing on that evidence.

What I meant by that was that it should shows me the conversation in the chat box even without me logging in. From my past experience, every time I log in, there's no one around. Hence over time, I stopped logging in to the chat as I assumed there would be nothing going on inside.
