In my opinion, the portal is:
Portal poll
Please vote in the poll, it might help me make these forums more user-friendly. Also, if you have a suggestion for interesting link to add, feel free to tell me.
Re: Portal poll
"Portal" comes from the Latin meaning "door". The portal here isn't really the door, as the home page is usually the first point of contact. So the portal fails on the first count.
At present, and it's not been going long, it just appears like a dumping ground for links to other sites, which would usually be a category in itself.
What would enhance the purpose and functionality would be to use the portal as a highlight and link to other sections of the site as they emerge (as the content is certain to grow). For instance the links there could be placed on a links page and a highlight or 'teaser' would draw attention to the fact and link to that page. A knowledge base page would be useful and could be treated the same way.
Navigation is the most crucial feature of any site. I'm sure it is possible to get the balance right so the site (which is good) gets even better.

Re: Portal poll
You might be right, Gray, but creating another website (apart from the portal) is a bit complicated. In the administration, I am entitled to create as many websites as I want, so we can have separate "knowledge base", "Links", "whatever". A knowledge base is a very good thing to have, but this is where we get to s problem. Of course, I can store documents within the forum and create links etc., but for that, I would need a bigger storage space (or I can use my own website and link to the files). In fact, additional storage is the only thing that needs to be paid for on this forum. Once we have the storage space and the system to provide knowledge, links and whatever next, we can talk about how to do it...

Re: Portal poll
@92220 That is a bit sexist and politically incorrect, go and sit on the naughty step for, . . . oooh, TWO seconds!!
OK Derryck, I can see there a re more than a few technical problems to overcome. I realise you are restricted by constraints within the forum template/host site, though I didn't know to what extent. If the storage space issues are solved later then the issue can be addressed then.

Me, and I'm a "he".
I'm here to participate in the discussion board, so while there's no knowledge base and such, I don't see any reason to use the portal.
Re: Portal poll
Changing the subject from s**tslinging, for a moment, there doesn't seem to be a facility to look up members' past posts, like there was on BVET and is on OBVE. Is it possible to provide "View users posts" at all?

Am I suposed to start begging and whining? I'll have to stop lowering my intelligence level to match someone else's level...
Well, I've made my point, that the portal - or rather, the Our Portal page (why make life so difficult?) - is not really useful as of now, so before new content like articles are added, I won't be using it.

Depends pretty much on you.joeyfjj wrote:

Said that before, but I will repeat / the site is a subject to further changes.

Did you attend one of those "special schools" where they taught you how to lower your intelligence or does it just come naturally to you? My money is on it coming naturally.
And my money is on that you both guys return back to the common gentlemanship and stop this kind of conversation. This is not what others are curious about and neither am I. Aimed to both of you.

Re: Portal poll
Now I personally think that the portal is a good idea. We can put one another's ideas on explaining what they are and maybe post a code of two to help developers with their coding.

Re: Portal poll
I got a new idea for the portal, actually... the middle art will be changed and will provide links to three subsections of this website - 1. The forums, which will be here, 2. The knowledge base (yet to be constructed), 3. The Links (yet to be constructed). Should you have suggestion for another (intelligent) section, I will be happy to hear you out. This way, it will fulfill the meaning of the word PORTAL, I guess...
And YAY, two hundred members!!!

Re: Portal poll
Possibly a mention and a link to the verified downloads? Depending on how much space you want to fill.

Accepted. Because it is not big words, what makes a man a real man, it is being able to apologize whenever it is appropriate.
Re: Portal poll

Re: Portal poll
Look right at the bottom of the page at the left Shaq, you'll find the new topic and reply buttons there. If you go to the memberlist (menubar, 3rd left, NOT the BWAAA members) you can find members and PM any of them under the 'contact' tab.
Re: Portal poll
Why would a link be required to the forums as most visitors to the site would arrive via the home page (or am I being thick yet again). Correct me if I am wrong but a Portal is basically a gateway to further exploration and a knowledge base would I am sure be very much appreciated.
