Strange OpenBVE Problem
Hello,
I recently downloaded OpenBVE and its dependencies on my Windows 7 laptop. I was able to download, open, and select routes and trains with no problem, but once the game had loaded, the screen appeared like this.
All the objects and trains etc are in the correct folders and everything, so I don't know whether the problem could be to do with my pc or how to solve the issue. Any help would be much appreciated
Kind Regards,
Matt

Re: Strange OpenBVE Problem
Update your graphics drivers I'd say. It's not rendering any textures, and an out of date graphics driver is basically the only thing likely to cause this. (If you'd put things in the wrong places you wouldn't even get that, just a barf on a massive list of errors)
If you let us know your PCs model or specs, we can point you in the right direction if you're not sure

Re: Strange OpenBVE Problem
I thought it may have something to do with graphics, I tried updating it, but my pc says the best driver software is already installed. My laptop model is Dell Studio 1555 pp39l and the current graphics driver is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500 series.
Many thanks,
Matt

Re: Strange OpenBVE Problem
It isn't just the textures, also the 2D overlay (error count, notch, brake, reverser, ...) isn't displayed correctly. Weird...

Re: Strange OpenBVE Problem
Try one of these two:
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/legacy/13-9-legacy_vista_win7_32_dd_ccc_whql.exe
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/legacy/13-9-legacy_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe
(Not sure if you're 64-bit or 32-bit)
OpenGL appears to be broken in the latest Dell supplied drivers as I'm finding complaints about it on various Minecraft boards too
Cheers

Re: Strange OpenBVE Problem
Hi matt, does the same thing happen when opening an object using object viewer or the route using route viewer, I use win7 on a dell laptop, with the same graphics driver, I have no problems with that combination, perhaps the driver is corrupted in some way...

Re: Strange OpenBVE Problem
Thanks for the links Chris, I will try them out soon, hopefully they will work. Hi mobile1, to be honest, when I open up Route or Object Viewer, the screen appears grey, and stays that way even though I pressed the F7 button like it requires me to to select an object or route to view. Maybe the driver is indeed corrupted. If this is the case, is there any easy way to fix this?

Re: Strange OpenBVE Problem
Hi Matt, another couple of questions, do the graphiics appear correct when you run other programs, ie. photoshop, paint shop or even perhaps youtube ?...are you sure that the openbve dependancies are all loaded and in the correct place ?, have you had openbve running using a different computer ?, if you are not sure about the answers to these questions, then check graymacs site , there you will find help on setting up correctly...please come back to me if it doesnt help, try my personal email address...

Re: Strange OpenBVE Problem
Yes the graphics appear fine on all of the above program, I've just checked and all the dependencies appear to be in the correct place. I've had previous versions of OpenBVE running on other computers but not this latest version. I had a look at Graymac's site and RailSimRoutes and it did help as it told me the right graphics driver to search for but in order for it to install, I need to install the catalyst installer which I can't do because of a persistent "install package failure".

Re: Strange OpenBVE Problem
Right, so we're going to get a little more involved then
First try installing the appropriate link from the two I posted above. Next:
Hit Start, and select Control Panel. From there, find System and Security and open Administrative Tools from there. One of the options should be 'Event Viewer'
Expand the Windows Logs option and select Application.
Somewhere in the first few lines there ought to be a red Error. Post this (or a screenshot if you can't figure out how to get the text), and we can go from there
Cheers

Re: Strange OpenBVE Problem
The details of the red error say: "Product: AMD Catalyst Install Manager -- Error 1723.There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action SetInstallDir, entry: SetInstallDir, library: C:\Windows\Installer\MSIA104.tmp"

Re: Strange OpenBVE Problem
I think you're probably missing a Visual C++ redistributable then. Try installing this one and then try the Catalyst installers again:

Re: Strange OpenBVE Problem
Sadly I'm encountering more issues regarding the Catalyst Update. It did install successfully with the link you gave me, but my PC doesn't seem to recognise the Catalyst as a driver. It refuses to shift from its current driver stating that it's fully up-to-date with the best driver and when I attempt to change it manually, it doesn't seem to recognise the latest one I downloaded as a driver, only seems to view it as a load of clickable files. Only the previous drivers are there as options and I don't know how to get it to detect the ATI driver.

Re: Strange OpenBVE Problem
Just some small ideas:
- You can make a try by changing the display settings (in the options menu of openBVE)
Vertical synchronization: Disabled
Level of anti-aliasing: 0
...
- A small look of the log file can perhaps help.

Just an idea, maybe someone can comment if it makes sense: What about trying a system repair with the original system installation disc? The installation errors mentioned sound somewhat strange.

Re: Strange OpenBVE Problem
Hi guys,
I am delighted to announce that the issue is fixed. I think somehow the system was prevented from receiving important Windows Updates, which included it's current driver. It's been updated and whereas I thought it needed an upgrade to a new driver, all it really needed was an update of the current one.
Thanks for your time and advice on this matter nonetheless, much appreciated.
Regards,
Matt
