City and South London Railway Empty City and South London Railway

Post by busheyheath Wed Apr 04, 2012 11:11 pm

Hi all,
While I cannot walk properly now, I started work on a next project.
In 1890 the CSLR opened from King William Street to Stockwell, in very narrow tunnels, ans so became the first deep-level underground railway in the world. The line was later extended to Clapham Common in the South, and Euston Railway station in the North.
I am going to build this line from Clapham to Euston. Today I finished most of the special rails that are needed (3rd rail 30 cm inside the rightmost running rail), and I started to build the Stockwell station. I will send pics as soon as possible. Not for claustrophobics!

Started making rails and tunnels. This is the very small 10'2" tunnel with standard gauge track and 3rd rail:

Nice, are you doing this as a cylinder, or are you calculating the faces manually?

It's two cylinders actually. The outer one serves as background (dark grey) and th inner one carries the pattern of the segments bolted together. I learned this trick from Steve Green... Very Happy

Started building today. The line starts here, in the very short (65m) and spartan Clapham Common station...

It is based on a railway from 1890 I think. Looks good so far. Smile

Yes, the whole line had wooden platforms. Today I added the signal box and siding. The line is now reaching Clapham North.

The line reached Stockwell now. I will send a pic as soon as I have laid the crossings and sidings.

Stockwell station. This was the end of the original 1890 line. To the right is the tunnel with extra track to the depot.

The only thing I know about the platforms is that they were made of wood (I have a drawing of Stockwell platforms where planks are clearly visible). Still I am not yet satisfied. Maybe they should be darker. The station tunnels are too white too, the light was far more yellowish.

Maybe use a bit of fog in the tunnels?? The atmosphere down there at the time would not have been particularly pure!

Thanks for the idea, I'll keep it in mind. The air down there seems to have been stale and wet (tunnel ventilation came much later).
I also noticed that the present platforms are too high (48 cm). The real platform height is mentioned nowhere, but I estimate is has to be about 32 cm (the car bottoms are very low)

Another interesting thing: the CSLR rails didn't have any ballast. They were screwed onto wooden sleepers, which rested directly on the cast-iron tunnel segments. Now I have to make a new railbed texture....

Along the route more and more interesting structures have been made, most of them having vanished in the 1920's with the enlargement of the tunnels and stations. Underground sidings, double crossovers etc. The line just reached Angel today, with another double crossover and siding...

A little drawback today. I discovered that the rails were lower in the tunnels, and platforms were as near as 1.2 m to the centre of the tracks. I will have to rebuild the whole line .... it's keeping me off the roads anyway Crying or Very sad

Thank you. Somehow you are right. But my goal is to make the route as good as possible, even if you don't mind. Meanwhile, I am aware of the fact that I will never be able to make this route perfect. Colours? Unknown. People? Nobody wearing 1910 clothes. Signalling? only a few details available. Despite all of this, I try to make the route as good as I can. Just wait......

I'm now trying to rebuild the original CSLR train from scrap. I once made this train for use in MSTS, but it seems impossible to convert the train to OpenBVE. It looked like this:
