Seeking Permission to use BVE sound files
Hello,
I am a very active user and content creator for OpenRails (and previously for MSTS).
An implementation of the British AWS system should soon be generally available for OpenRails. However to make good use of those I would like to have some better sounds that those that I have at the moment. There are some excellent AWS sounds available with BVE models. I would like to contact the authors or copyright owners for permission to use and distribute those files as freeware for use with OpenRails models. The files that I am particularly interested to use are the following:
AWS.wav (there is more than one file of this name - the one I need permission for is a long continuous horn from older diesel of first gen dmu)
AWSBell2.wav
aws_bing.wav
AWSnew.wav
If you can give permission for me to use any of these files, or tell me how to contact a person who can, I would be grateful. I can be contacted either via this website or directly to darwinesmith[at]yahoo[dot]co[dot]uk

Re: Seeking Permission to use BVE sound files
- AWS.wav - Probably recorded by Martin Corbett ( https://www.flickr.com/photos/158820378@N06/ )
- aws_bing.wav - Probably David White, gone for ~15 years.
- AWSnew.wav - Probably David White again.
- AWSBell2.wav - ???
I need links to the exact places these have come from to be certain though so I can check the precise files- There are a *lot* of variants on these floating around.
My strong suspicion is that getting hold of the original authors is likely to be highly problematic; Most of the soundsets for BVE were recorded 10+ years ago by people who've left the scene.
Re: Seeking Permission to use BVE sound files
The AWS.wav is included with BR_Class37-416_passenger_openBVE the readme says to ask permission from Anthony Bowden. The contact given is via a now defunct website.

Re: Seeking Permission to use BVE sound files
That's a rather older version than I was expecting
AWS.wav from that one was recorded by Martin Corbett. Last contact I had with him was ~2 years ago, but I believe he's still available through Flickr.

Re: Seeking Permission to use BVE sound files
The AWSBell2.wav I have is identical to the AWSBell.wav included with Western D1015 from BVE Cornwall.

Re: Seeking Permission to use BVE sound files
AWS.wav from cl323_unrefurb_openbve is similar to the AWSnew.wav that I have and would be equally good to use if I can get permission.

That one is from Martin Corbett.

The AWS.wav included in cl323_unrefurb_openbve is by Zane Saxton.
He moved onto commercial content for Train Simulator (may well have had something in MSTS too), and you're unlikely to get permission for that one.
There is a public domain bing in the 323 here:

Re: Seeking Permission to use BVE sound files
Thanks very much for your help so far Leezer.
I have been able to contact Martin Corbett and he has given permission for me to use his files. This gives me good bell and warning sounds for AWS on older locos.
I also have a reasonably good 'bing' sound from another source.
What I now want to find is a modern AWS warning alert that is either a bit longer in duration or loops well. The one on the freeware 323 seems to be more beep-beep-beep than continuous tone. I have one wav file available to me, but it is not very long and does not loop well.
The AWSnew.wav that I have so far been unable to locate the origin of is 640kb and lasts 14 seconds, so is ideal for my purposes.

Re: Seeking Permission to use BVE sound files
I have found the final file. It is the AWS.wav from the Cheltenham Trains Class 35 from Celtic Rail. I have tried to contact Graymac through Facebook.

Re: Seeking Permission to use BVE sound files
I've pointed out that the sound file in question is from Martin Corbett.
Re: Seeking Permission to use BVE sound files
Thanks for your help everyone.
Most of the files I wish to use were created by Martin Corbett, so my BVE hunt has now come to an end.
I will be using three of Mr Corbett's files in a freeware package and will be attributing them to him.
Finally I am looking for one further sound, although as far is I know it does not exist in the BVE world. I still want to find a sound for the GWR AWS that preceded the BR version. As far as I can tell it was a 'whooping' sound something like an air raid or flood warning siren but with a higher pitch. Does anyone know where I might find a digital recording of it? (It was it seems on some old Argo records, footplate recordings of GWR King Class, but I have no means to obtain it from there.)

That's the record in question, although I haven't gone through it looking for the sound.
IIRC the NRM holds the original tapes for this.

Re: Seeking Permission to use BVE sound files
Wow, thanks for that. The siren is very clear at about 2m42s in the recording.
