Network West Midlands crash

Hi all not sure whether this is a newbie question or not........

I have been a fan of Openbve for sometime now but have only just installed version 1.5.0.9.

I have installed NWM and the 2006-2010 era works fine but when I try to select a route from the 2001-2005 era openbve crashes.

All other routes work fine as well.

I am running a 2015 MacBook pro retina.

Both era's of NWM work fine in openbve version 1.4.3.

Sorry but I am not sure what specific information is required please advise.

Hi,
Firstly, you should have posted under Technical Questions, but this is your third post, so it's understandable.
Secondly, are you using OS X / macOS?
And thirdly, OpenBve spits out crash logs, it's usually found in the same folder as config files. You'll usually find it in a hidden folder on your personal folder. (I don't have much experience with Macs, this is just general advice when posting a problem.)

As noted, crash logs should hopefully have been produced.
These can be accessed more easily by using the link on the bottom left of the main menu- 'Report Problem'

I've just tested a couple of 2001- 2005 routes on my main Windows box, and they work OK here.
I can't think of any changes that should affect NWM off the top of my head, but I'll do some digging and get back to you.

If you've got a crash log, that would be helpful, if not please let me know the following:

• Specific routefile
  
• Selected train
  
• Where it crashes exactly (When clicking in the main menu? Loading screen? In-game somewhere?)
  

Either way, we'll get this sorted.

Update:
I've just tried a couple of NWM 2001-2005 files on a Mac VM (El-Capitan), and they're working just fine here, loads into game with no issues that I can see.
The Mac VM is terminally slow, but it all appears to work.

As I can't reproduce at my end, I need a crash log or further details

My system MacBook pro retina MacOS Sierra 10.12.3
Any route selected from the 2001-2005 era creates the crash so don't get to select a train.
Crashes when clicking on any route.
I do keep getting a " too many files open" message.
Sorry but seem unable to attach a log. Probably doing it wrong so some help needed here please.

PS I should also mention that this has only just started to happen. When I first installed V1.5 it did work but unfortunately I cannot work out what has changed to cause the crash.


A bit later.........

I decided to delete everything, download everything anew, have a reboot and a fresh install and yes the 2001-2005 era route now works.

The only thing is the other one doesn't, how frustrating is that.

PPS I have attached a log as shown..?

The crash in the log is unfortunately somewhat generic, and just says that something in a background thread crashed unfortunately.

The 'too many files open' message is suspicious though.
Recent versions of OS X have a limit of 256 max open files:

No idea what would happen if we exceeded that limit whilst in a background thread, but I'd say that's a very good potential culprit.

That also ties in with things starting working after a reboot, as you'd probably have less running in the background at that point

I'll do some digging and try and figure out how many files NWM has open at any one time.

Edit:
The number of files opened by NWM under Windows appears sensible.
I have found a very small open file leak (The route image/ train image weren't disposed of when the sim started), but that's not going to be causing this.

Will do some more digging.

It's fixed a few more potential leaks, plus disables the FileSystemWatcher under OS-X, as this seems to be a little problematic. (Specifically, it seems to be holding a soft handle to all files in the current routefile directory, which in NWM's case is far too many.....)

I can't reproduce your crash, but this may help.

Hi Leezer3, top man this is looking good.

I have installed this download and it is working.

I actually downloaded and installed this from your night build this morning and it was a no go, so if you have changed it since then you have done it.

I can now access both era's.

I am away this weekend so will not be able to give it a full going over 'till Monday, but at the moment it looks good.

OK had time for another quick test.

I can select a route from either era and a train however when I press start I get "unhandled windows forms exception" click ok and then crashes.

PS I seem to have trouble finding the path for both routes and trains in the relevant browsers in openbve, very hit and miss.?

Not quite sure what you're getting at with your PS though, can you be more specific at all?

I have installed the above version of openbve and it is working a treat. Top job.

Everything seems to be working as it should, an excellent version in my opinion.

As regards the PS,well when you start a new game you go to a page where you select the route and train.
On that page there is box marked selection.
Under that there are 2 boxes marked Browse manually and Recently Used.
Under that is a ( what I call ) a browser box where the path to the route is set, and it was this path to the route folder of openbve that was all a jumble.

However I am delighted to tell that, this also is now back to working normally.
