vehicle objects for routes
I'm putting together some vehicle objects which will be released as "public domain" for all users to deploy as they will. The objects can be altered and redistributed if so desired. The truck (first object WIP) could be a suitable replacement for an existing object that has been recently had "rights" argued about in public. Once I have done a basic model perhaps others will join in and add variations. As I say, NO restrictions will be imposed on any of this work. Ever.
Re: vehicle objects for routes
Good idea
Have a pair of buses:
Plymouth CityBus Plaxton Pointer
Western National Leyland National
Should now be on the objects page of my site.
(Not doing a frontpage news on them, but they're there)
Edit: If anyone wishes to supply me with photographs for more Plaxton Pointer variants (They're basically the standard 1990s bus model, everywhere should have a few), I'll run off some variations.
Cheers

Re: vehicle objects for routes
I have made two files (.b3d & .csv) available, with the textures all in .png format using 0,0,0 transparency.
Here's the link for the files: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8742935/artic1.zip

An alternative version here:

Artics also available here: http://celtictrainsim.com/freebiesl.html
Including an "Eddified" version

Nice, I think we are lacking this kind of objects in general. I might put some of them to a good use... I will see if I can contribute myself, I will need to find something geographically neutral.

@mobile1 - like the IRA, "I haven't gone away, you know"
@dexter - the artic would probably not be out of place in more or less any European route scenario. Do like some users do to the trains - "re-skin" the textures. It is very easy to just change the curtainside trailer texture, put a logo or signwriting for a local transport company on it. Use "replace color" in your pic edit software on the cab or trailer textures to make as many varieties as you want. All from the basic starter textures provided.

WIP
I opted for a rail vehicle which I also design generic enough to be usable in all european routes and, with some correction of the wagon markings, worldwide. Will be released as Creative Commons "Zero" (meaning Public Domain where possible and unlimited, unrestricted, irrevocable rights where PD is not permissible, like Germany). Now, what the hell is it (or rather, gonna be)? Winner gets a virtual cookie.
BTW, Graymac or Dexter, would one of you be so kind and host it once it's finished?
I'm having some slight issues with one texture, transparencies don't work as I want them to. Strange - the texture is technically identical with that of the spray: 2 colour, PNG, one colour saved as transparent. The only difference is, the spray has black as the transparent colour and the rest (=white) is visible, the problematic texture has white as transparent and black is visible. Is shown plain black instead ^.- Any ideas?
EDIT
Solved - got mismapped in Blender's export process (I modeled in current Blender, exported to .obj, imported in Blender 2.4.6, exported as .b3d; somewhere in the process the low right pixel got mapped over the whole face). Also corrected a texture import and solved face direction issues:
Yes, the steps in the shadow and in the actual ladder don't match. Lost the layered texture file and was too lazy to recreate it, while so many steps in the actual ladder would look very inconvincing. But since that's a pass-by-object I don't think it's an issue, is it?

I'm sure we'll find a place (or two) to "park" it when it's finished. I take it that it's a present from Monsanto to the weeds on the track??

Well, in Germany BASF seem to be the top dog, but yeah, basically it is

Re: vehicle objects for routes
So, next stage finished. For a rather simple model like this one a simpler model of the running gear would suffice, but I prefer to create reusable parts meaning I created a still rudimentary, but sufficingly detailed for state of the art vehicles model of a single axle running gear. For simplicity I opted for having the spring leaf block straight instead of curving it, there is no justification for that effort in my eyes, but anybody feel free to adjust it to their own needs That's the magic of public domain. Just like having a one night stand: No strings attached
Now for buffers, brakes etc...

Re: vehicle objects for routes
With one of Graymac's great bridges and rails as background, have some "beauty shots" of the finished soon-to-be-released thing.
Seems I got slightly off topic with this rail vehicle though so let's get BTT which seems to rather be generic road vehicles. Maybe I'll also do somethng in this direction.

Re: vehicle objects for routes
Sorry guys, haven't been around for a short while. I would definitely find space for hosting if needed, I have an unlimited package. But I am not going to fight graymac, he is a friend of mine!
Re: vehicle objects for routes
Hosting space wouldn't be a problem, at least for the time being I would use the free space on the miniature railway server. Though with you having unlimited space that would be preferable since this'd be the hopefully final destination of the file ;-) I'm just not planning on creating an OpenBVE page of my own, at least currently, so basically it was just about embedding the addon somewhere. Especially since I also think we lose greatly on not having at least a central addon hub besides the routes wiki and every new, especially if tiny, page aggreviates this.
I sent the current version to Graymac as I'd love feedback whether there's something to be corrected, if you could send me your mail address I'd like your comments as well before final release.

Re: vehicle objects for routes
Another "freebie" - this one's unlettered so it is likely to be easy to adapt for different operators.

More wheels - VW Polo, public domain.

Re: vehicle objects for routes
Next job on the production line. I sometimes use a transparent block face as a "measuring stick" - you can move it about with the"translate" command. Helps when working out vertex positions and visually placing coordinates.
Re: vehicle objects for routes
And here's the finished van, get it here, there is a .csv and a .b3d file - textures common to both.

Re: vehicle objects for routes
Nice ones, Gray. Shall I add them to the collection sent before? I should be able to upload the objects tomorrow afternoon (or maybe morning, it depends on the workload). In any case - finally...
Re: vehicle objects for routes
Yes, do add them all. One of the reasons why I wanted to give all this stuff away (and Stephen Cross has added to them as well) is for the "freebies" to be available from several places and NOT to have any control over them, so "permissions" (which don't exist or aren't needed) can never be withdrawn by me, or anyone, in a "hissy fit".
I want those days to be gone for good.
(Do feel free to make "variations". Most of the vehicles (DAF, Toyota, VW, Peugeot... ) would be suitable in any European route. I'm sure you see them from IRL to CZ, and from N to E )

Re: vehicle objects for routes
Just please change the license from Public Domain to Creative Commons 0. Some countries don't permit releasing something into PD, which CC0 does work around. Basically, CC0 says "This work is PD. If that isn't permitted in your country, you have all rights permissible in your country."

Re: vehicle objects for routes
As the files are free of restrictions it is possible for routebuilders in the countries Quork refers to to simply add a comment in the files to the effect that they are now "cc 0".
