Preserved Prisoner Coach at Ex Maud Junction Musium Site 16th Sept. 2016

Visited the site of Maud Junction, the ex GNSR station on the old Dyce to Fraserburgh and Peterhead branches. Maud Junction and station is still quite in situe and is the site for the Maud Railway Museum. The musium is open on some Saturdays so you need to check opening days before visiting. However, the Coach and small Goods Van are on permanant show at the old station site. There is no bus service from nearby Mintlaw on Saturdays & Sundays. As I don't have personal transport I had to take the bus from Aberdeen to Mintlaw and walk the 5 miles along the old Peterhead track bed down to Maud and back again. It made for a pleasant day out.
Back in August the museum took over the newly preserved Coach from the Peterhead-Stirling Quarry railway's Ex Prisoner's Passenger Coach, which is in excellent condition. The Quarry railway was worked by Prisoners from Peterhead Prison, who built the massive breakwater piers at Peterhead. The work was to take 25 years from the latter 1800's but delays due to the two World Wars, it was not completed until 1956. The railway closed and demolished on the completion of the work. It was to standard gauge and fully signaled.Stirling Hill Quarry is at Boddam and is still in operation today.
The Prisoner's Coach, along with a Tool or Explosives wagon stand on a section of track on the old Up Fraserburgh-Aberdeen platform. The prisoner trains were accompanied by armed guard.

Excellent restoration job. Nice basic accommodation - convicts have it too cushy nowadays!!

Peterhead prison held the hardest of criminals and it's not surprising armed guards were necessary. The prison is closed and is now an interesting museum. The small wagon as seen was on display in the prison square for some years and I was surprised to see it at Maud.
