openBVE 1.5.0- RC1
As I'm sure most of you are aware, I've been working on the main openBVE source for some time.
This fork of the project now has a (hopefully!) permanent home at http://www.openbve-project.net
Various features have been added, and I've now got people actually posting files which take advantage of these features
With that in mind, I've decided it's time to post the first Release Candidate for the 1.5.0 series.
This is provided as either a Windows Installer, a tar.gz archive suitable for all systems, or a Mac .dmg
Significant changes:
Known issues:
Please post any bugs with this version in the following topic:

Cheers

Re: openBVE 1.5.0- RC1
Both my Windows Smart Screen Filter and my security program do not consider the Installer a safe download Chris, so I've not down loaded it.
I would be quite happy personally if it was just a zip file.

Nice to see we have reached enough stability as to release a new 'oficial' build. Very good job!
I will try to update both the Catalan and the Spanish translations as soon as possible.

Looking really nice. I would suggest citing Mono Runtime as a dependency for the Linux version.
Also, I'll update brazilian portuguese when I have the time.

Hmmm. I'm having a spot of bother

Re: openBVE 1.5.0- RC1
Windows gives a message of "openbve -1.5.0.1-setup.exe is not commonly downloaded and could harm your computer." which gives me a option of delete or run. However being new Norton deletes the download with the message of: "openbve -1.5.0.1-setup.exe is not safe and has been removed."
Norton report:
Restoring the download from Norton windows smartscreen asks if I am sure I want to run it, as it thinks it is not safe. This trouble with a new .exe installation file I have seen before because it's the same thing when I was beta testing software about a year ago. After a while it didn't get flagged as a threat.
It installs fine to a subfolder of C:\Openbve. However I get a message of :Unhandled exception" Could not find a part of the path 'C:\Openbve 1.5.0\openBVE\Data\Languages'. when running the program.

Re: openBVE 1.5.0- RC1
Heck, something has to go wrong
It's throwing a complete fit because it's expecting the data to be inside a 'Data' folder by default, and everything goes downhill from there- The errors aren't translated as it can't find the default language.
Somehow, when packaging the installer, the data got into the main app folder.....
Can't reproduce the fourth one though.
Give me an hour or so to sort this mess out.....
Cheers

Re: openBVE 1.5.0- RC1
Windows installer fixed, and whilst the archive wasn't affected by this, a partial fix has been made, so that you're at least provided with a couple of English error messages.
(Note: If the data folder is missing or misplaced, all kinds of bad things will happen.....)
The Mac build is currently still at 1.5.0.1 as Travis-CI is currently having issues.
It'll update as soon as these are cleared hopefully.
Further Note:
The file scans as virus free on VirusTotal, other than a single Chinese vendor, who I can't do much about....
As Matt notes, the more people with Norton etc. who visit the homepage/ download the program, the more 'trust' it will gain.
Nothing much I can do to speed that up, other than paying £20 odd a year for a code sigining certificate. Not on my immediate plants, but I might consider it if this becomes a little more popular.
Cheers

I'd donate for the Norton certificate

Money isn't so much a problem (Even yearly; I think I probably pay ~£100 to keep my stuff online, although that's a whole bunch of other bits and bobs too), rather it comes with a lot of baggage attached
There's also the issue of accountability.
Whilst I'm doing the majority of the development, this project has had contributions from others both recently and in the past, and I'd like to hope that this might improve in the future.
Money, and for that matter control of the 'signed' binaries is one thing when a single developer is involved, but with multiple people involved, this is *not* something I'd consider without thinking about, and probably drawing up formal arrangements.
Cheers
Re: openBVE 1.5.0- RC1
Program works correctly now (except of course with Norton and windows smartscreen). Thanks for your work.

Oh... Yeah, since there'd be the theoretical risk of someone smuggling malicious code in, and you could be made responsible for that =\ Didn't think about that one.

Re: openBVE 1.5.0- RC1
Quite Frankly the reason why your Antivirus programs pick it up as unsafe is simply because it is a .exe type file. Considering Openbve is safe it shouldn't limit you from running the executable rather than thinking otherwise there may be some Malicious code etc. I've come across this problem many times myself but I can assure that if you know it's a safe download, don't let the Antiviral blocking software tell you otherwiseStevegr wrote:Both my Windows Smart Screen Filter and my security program do not consider the Installer a safe download Chris, so I've not down loaded it.
I would be quite happily personally if it was just a zip file.
Hope this is useful for you Steve

Whilst I agree in principle, you should always take a degree of caution with *anything* downloaded from the internet.
On a lighter note, I've just posted RC3.
This adds ~30 more strings to those available for translation, plus fixes two more obscure bugs (The only way I could trigger either of these was via a missing Data\Compatibility folder, but I'd rather not crash at all )
Cheers
Re: openBVE 1.5.0- RC1
I'm glad to see OpenBVE going this far. I was out of the forums for a couple of weeks because of work, but now I have time to do the Hungarian translation.
Re: openBVE 1.5.0- RC1
Avast blocks the Windows installer file download, it says threat blocked and that it is DRep.
Re: openBVE 1.5.0- RC1
Just to give you a heads up, I wrote to Avast today and they whitelisted http://openbve-project.net, so the installer is not reported as a threat any more.
