Ah, I've got something for ye, Gray, or at least I think I do Smile

There's a long-running german series about railways all over the world called Eisenbahnromantik, they upload many of their movies to youtube also. Lately, they uploaded an episode about railways in Northern Ireland and the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland. There a song about irish railways is mentioned I found on youtube later, here it is:

The czech language is quite funny (in a positive sense!) in its sound and structure for a polishman; but knowing polish and german makes one erupt in laughter every now and then; the amount of german loanwords is tremendous. Let's just say "ajznbaniak" (however it might be spelled, descends from Eisenbahner) So, let's have this song, which is (a li'l bit) about railways too.

Better sound quality:

Original by composer Jaromir Nohavica:

Lyrics of the first verse, translated as far as I can, would be nice if Dex could correct and add the other ones, where I have an idea what's being said but not enough understanding to concretely translate it

|: Drink water :| but not rum. ( <-- chorus)

Some bad mooded railroader
drank Advocaat at work
his mouth got glued closed
a diesel loco killed him

Having come back from work quite tired and stressed out (little sleep, long shift and much chaos... That was a special week, more chaos in five shifts than I've seen in the over two years before in sum...) yesterday evening, I chilled out a bit by strolling through this thread. I found the following song posted by someone last year:

Immediately I had to think of the good old polish rock band Budka Suflera (history reaching to 1969, found in 1974, still active), who, besides composing many of their own pieces, also covered several western songs, which was quite risky back in those times. Their first cover was a cover of the same song as the cover embedded above, "Ain't no sunshine" by Billy Withers, titled as "Sen o dolinie" (Dream about a valley), which I'd like to show you:

And an original song by them, "Bal wszystkich świętych" (All saints' ball):

This sunday is like some B-movie
Some guy strolls in front of some boring background
The screenwriter took all the money and began to booze
And of the dialogues remained zero, null and nothing

All saints party in heaven
Golden dust is falling down
But I'm swaning 'round again without you
And hell's so close for me
(|: while today all saints, all of them, have a ball... :|)

I'd wish so very much to meet you once in this single day
Or reverse time by a week, but that's not possible
Although I know the bitter taste of loneliness
If there are no other sundays, alas, what do I care...

All saints party in heaven
Golden dust is falling down
But I'm swaning 'round again without you
And hell's so close for me
The world's turning with me alone now
The stars are burning just like steel
You erased me from your memory
Till I even pity myself
(|: while today all saints, all of them, have a ball... :|
All saints party in heaven
Golden dust is falling down
But I'm swaning 'round again without you
And hell's so close for me)

The world's turning with me alone now
The stars are burning just like steel
You erased me from your memory
Till I even pity myself
(|: while today all saints, all of them, have a ball... :|)

Yeah, that's a great hit by them as well, and was one of my favourite musical pieces as a child. It's a bit like rediscovering them for me, as I hadn't listened to them since I moved out from my parents, except for hearing them occasionally when being with my grandparents. "Ain't no sunshine" triggered the memory piece again *g* Great to see they're known outside poland and the polonia as well!

Thanks for linking Coma, didn't know them; though that's not my kind really, but still good. I'll try and find some more examples of polish music to link them here, especially blues/rock (e.g. Dżem), classic singer-songwriterism (e.g. Kaczmarek, Wysocki) and (folk-)metal (e.g. Percival Schuttenbach), so stay tuned Smile

Ah, Doc Who, always worth listening to Very Happy

While working on the Caerleon textures I was listening to Abney Park. Abney Park are a former goth band, who came to being "the" steampunk band. They're really worth listening to (both from their goth and their steampunk eras), but that's not why I'm posting here; I rather want to show with four examples, how different a song may be interpreted and yet always have its authenticity, its meaning, its emotions. It's the irish song "I am stretched on your grave" and the versions are by Sinead O'Connor, by Abney Park, by Dead can Dance, by Kate Rusby and by a duo called Blue Sun.

X Japan was a great and long-lived japanese band, which had evolved very much in their existance, starting off with Metal and ending up with a, partly very balladic, Progressive Rock, while being, more or less all the time, one of the great precursors of Visual Kei. Whatever they did, they did with passion and talent. Interesting enough, the members also evolved in different directions, one of the reasons why they disbanded - and yet they still couldn't let go, finally reuniting after ten years in 2007, their performances all exposing a great emotional bond between the musicians, which is stronger than all the differences they have. The concrete reason for disband was Toshi, the vocalist, not being able to reconcile his carreer with his new believings, but he obviously missed it very much nonetheless, as he also was the one precursing the reunion.
Much of X Japan's music is composed by Yoshiki, the percussionist and pianist of the band. Even years before the band had disbanded, he started off experimenting in very different ways, especially succeeding with "classic" orchestral music, which while I don't dare categorize more closely I'd say is especially heavy on late classical (meaning the musical epoque between baroque and romanticism) and early romantic influences; short quotes from Beethoven can be heard every now and then in his compositions and arrangements. A big hit was his classical rewrites of several X Japan metal songs, which in my opinion are on one hand musically very true to the metal versions without being just "pumped down" on a symphonic orchestra but abily transcribed, using all the power, all the tools and all the magic of orchestral music. I tend to think the fact that already the first of the two albums was recorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, when X Japan was still a quite rough metal band not known very much outside the metal scene, confirms my view on this.

So, enough jabbered, here's to metal and orchestra - Vanishing Love in a live performance from 1988 and in the orchestral version from "Eternal Melody" in 1993.

Something for Graymac, I think. Luar na Lubre are a galician (Galicia - an autonomic part of Spain) band who actively participate in Galicia's rediscovery of their celtic roots. There are many bands doing this, Luar na Lubre however are my favourite example of this.

One of my favourites by Luar na Lubre, Memoria da Noite (memory of the night), with subtitles in spanish (it's worth reading them, you'll notice there's quite a difference between spanish and galician).

In this song I recognize several parts coming from several british celtic (I think irish) songs, though I can't seem to remember even one title. However a great example for how the aforementioned rediscovery of the celtic roots is heavily based on celtic brethren who were able to maintain their culture (i.e. mostly Ireland and Scotland), just like it was the case with the Bretagne before. And that again is a great example for how culture can be traditional, "backward" and yet living, flexible, progressing:

Great song with great lyrics about a great topic by a great band in a great genre in a great subculture Laughing
Omnia are a pagan folk band with a very versatile repertoire. This song is about the old and yet always red-hot topic of mankind and nature and mankind's behaviour being a cul de sac. Although in a way the lyrics also seem to often apply when you as an individual get in contact with agitated masses (vulgo "mob"), e.g. in every rush hour Twisted Evil

Beautiful lovesong by folk metal band "Schandmaul", played on Wacken Metal festival, the biggest metal festival in the world.

The dialogue:
Frontman: "All this calamitous blubbering... Is this to tell us, you want to hear more?!"
Crowd: "YES!"
"Alright. Another question remains, though: Well, we're on a metal festival of course. Meaning what we're gonna do next is very daring. But: Inbetween all this noise around here, could you also stand a love act?"
"YES!"
"Alright then. Let me see your lighters!"

The lyrics:
