Isn't this a case of ATI/AMD vs. Nvidia ? Even with my AMD Radeon HD6850, Direct3D-based applications seem to be a lot smoother than their OpenGL counterparts, while with my previous PC, the GeForce 8600GS seemed to prefer openGL applications instead of D3D ones.
