Hi Jack, could you tell me whereabouts the sim freezes when running routes? Is it at the start when the sim loads and you are moving or something else?

It sometimes happens to me when a large file is being loaded into memory. If it happens you can note the distance from the start of the route and see what is being loaded ahead depending on the distance ahead you have in settings. If I get a freeze at 1000m and my viewing distance is set at 1600m ahead then I would look at the route file and see what is happening at 2600m.

I'm sure this is something Chris could look into if it's the latest stable version of OpenBve.
What are your computer specifications? It could give a bit more information as to why the lag spikes are happening?
ecreek could be right but if it's with anything specs wise then maybe it could be resolvable.

Re: bve freezing
I would also guess you might have 4GB of RAM which is usually the case with PCs nowadays, most people like me upgrade to maybe an 8GB or 16GB RAM for gaming sake, but it's a puzzler trying to piece together what the main cause of freezing is.
One other thing I could suggest is maybe making sure no other unnecessary background programs are open or running which could improve overall performance.

Re: bve freezing
I don’t know if your problem might be to do with openBVE running out of memory but I think this might help somewhat

Re: bve freezing
I do experience occasional random stuttering as well, and it definitely isn't RAM-related, there's plenty of that on my machine... Usually restarting the system helps such problems. Not only with OpenBVE, I found executing different GPU-heavy software one after the other without reboots inbetween (e.g. editing video, then playing a game, then playing another game, then rendering something, ...) tends to invite problems like lacking performance, graphical glitches, stuttering etc.

Do you shut your computer down when you have finished with it?

Re: bve freezing
It sort of preserves the hard disk and so it lasts longer. Maybe shut it down overnight when you’re not using it.
