Re: I am Listening to...
It is time for a new generation to be introduced to the humour of Harvard mathematician Tom Lehrer.
Of whom the critic of the New York Times said, "Mr Lehrer's muse remains unfettered by the boundaries of good taste"
This is Mr Lehrer's approximation of a ballad in the folk-song genre:

Well done, Graham. I remember the very first time I saw Tom Leher way back in the late 50's to early 60's. He really pushed the boat out on humour that hit home, whatever the subject. Thanks for bringing him to the fore and introducing him to a present day audiance. I remember too, when he died, way before his time.

I'll add to the exotic music listed here

@billEWS - Hold on a minute with the shovel, Bill. Do ye have Tom Lehrer buried before he's dead? Are you SURE? I can't find any obituaries anywhere and he's alive on the Wikipedia page.
And if Mr Lehrer's reading this by any chance, alive if not kicking, can I wish him a happy 85th birthday for next April 9way before his time.
@ Derryck -
Nice theatrical touch. A bit like Carnaby Street in the 60s, perhaps a bit more glitter. Yer man Shakespeare, was it? Said "Clothes maketh the man", which under Brussels legislation also applies to women and imported fruit. Sometimes it makes a more impressive act if the performers have their kit ON rather than OFF.Not bad, and the costumes are... unusual, shall we say?
Re: I am Listening to...
Well, that's visual kei, a japanese movement. Formerly it was quite independent; Malice Mizer expanded the term very much and got it connected to gothic. Overall however, that's all unclear, and I resort to a term I often use (including applying it to myself), that's "black scene". I don't know if it is known in English, in German "Schwarze Szene" is an umbrella term for gothic, emo, metal, industrial, electro, but also such for an outstander seemingly unrelated scenes as great parts of the medieval scene or the BDSM/fetish scene. Oh well, that's again pigeonholing things I prefer to take holistically. You get the idea

Mark Knopfler - Fear and Hatred (from the music for the great movie Cal)
Amazingly, it seems the song is widely unknown and not present in any video hosts... You might consider this link:
http://grooveshark.com/s/Fear+And+Hatred/3SWJHR?src=5
Or better even listen to the whole album:
http://grooveshark.com/album/Cal/476911
Or even better, watch the movie:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cal_%28film%29
I watched it with my parents when I was... phew... twelve I think, and that was, as far as I remember, my first intensive contact with the Irish Cause. Hard stuff, especially if you're twelve, but still a movie I wouldn't want to miss.
And afterwards you might either continue into this direction with
Or switch to the light side of modern and yet very folky northern music, where I'd love to recommend the beautiful album "Tideland" by celtic (irish) Dolores Keane and scandinavian (norwegian) Rita Eriksen. The great songs include the melancholic norwegian "Kvi gjeng Du se einsleg og stundar" and the irish, gaelige "Thuas Ag Gort A Charmain".

And now I'd love to post a link to a great 'acoustic/folk/medieval/celtic' band PurPur: http://www.myspace.com/purpurgabriaundleonora/music
Listen to them =) Think they're great? Well, the records don't give even a clue about how great they're live =D I saw them in a medieval pub in the old city centre of franconian Schwabach (near Nuernberg). Their last song was a great irish drinking song. I'm a little-drinker, but watching most other guests I can say it was... efficient. =D

Yeah, maybe a bit - but it is actually not showing anything and I was hoping people will focus on the music contained... which I believe is totally safe.

Something rather less punk-ish
Eat Celtic music, punks!!!!
Lovely, but very sad song Origins in Scottish tradition, shows arranged marriages were nothing new and could end in tragedy.

Re: I am Listening to...
One of the so fascinating aspects of this music is for me the performance culture so totally different from what we know in the western world. In many ways, it is a reminder for us, that while the Japanese (and many other south-eastern asia nations) adapted very well to the globalized, western dominated world, they still are a completely different culture to be kept in mind and respected; with a strangeness in the positive meaning of the word so big our national culture differences of the western world fade away against. In some way it also makes me think about how much was lost all around the world by not having what Star Trek calls the "First Directive" or "Directive of Non-Interference".
