Cool! And the texture is really nice too.

What type of DMU is this?

Well, Alan supplied me with the pics of an early DMU in BR green which I got the components from, and I wasn't 100% sure at first but have come down on the odds of it being an early 101 class. The leading car had the number "E51070" on it - from which I guess it was Eastern region stock circa 1960. Some bright bugger out there will no doubt know everything about it!!
Anyway, the side shots were of most interest as they are of a clean unit photographed "square on" and at a good resolution. I work by building a side in Photoshop layers so, for example, I might get a good window frame, fix it up and scale/clone it for all the windows on that side. Ditto doors. I  use a "template" layer with a whole car image for relative placement of components, this can be either a photo or a scale drawing depending on what I can find.  Alan has given me some good DMU stuff as well as the photos. The design image is around 900-1000 pixels high and gets reduced for the working texture. This working method allows for variants to be readily produced.

I love trains from that era and this one looks very friendly, so to speak. I'm really looking forward to it.

Some work done on bogies and underframe. Thanks for the offer, Chris. I would like some pics of front and (part of) a side then I can make some variants of the class. I will probably do a "higher detail" and an "economy" one eventually to suit as many users as possible. I would also appreciate a pic of the underframe bits on a trailer/centre car if anyone has one, as a 3/4 car set would be nice too.

Will see what I can do, but may not be for a week or two. Definitely up there 6-9th September (Gala....) and may be up next week, depending on the weather and what's going on Smile

Rather nice snap of the end (not mine mind) just after finishing of the repaint on the second car at the end of this page:
http://nnrailway.blogspot.co.uk/2015/08/august-news-part-3.html

IIRC, it's now in as-built condition, or at least as mechanically close as the engineering department will let us get.

Also, FWIW, I presume you have seen these:

No hurry Chris, As I've made Photoshop templates for the project I can produce variants as time goes on.
The beautifully restored dmu pic on the first link yielded up a nice bit of buffer bracket detail - another piece in the jigsaw!
I'm relying entirely on Martin Corbett's superb DMU train cabs to attach these externals on, which was the case for the recent Irish DMU for "Kilmagranny".

If you want to be extra authentic, you could look at the early sets, which worked in East Anglia- they were almost identical to the production sets, but had waist-high MU jumpers (like the Derby Lightweights) and a fairing under the bufferbeam.  Livery-wise they were built with 3 lines, with the centre one rising to run through the windows as on your WIP (although some were later relivereied to allow mixed-class sets without the lining being different).  The prototype sets went by around 1969 when the routes they worked closed.  They only went becasue they were non-standard for multiple working.

One other detail difference in sets working over there was what looked like a narrow window or advert panel just behind the cab door- it was a rubber panel to protect the bodywork as the driver changed single-line tokens.

Yes, there seems to be several regional differences as well as production alterations as time went on.
I will be looking to produce some of these. Today I've been tinkering with the buffer components.

Looking forward to seeing the finished result here Gray, I really dont have the time or patience to do externals if I'm being honest so these will compliment my cabs superbly. I have in my posession some blue liveried example photos that were taken 'just in case' if you want them they are yours to do whatever with.
Just one observation, and I'm being really picky here, the windscreens look too large on the vertical to my eyes, if you look at the prototype they are a tad squarer and sit roughly identical in height to the drivers door droplights.
Top job job though and way beyond any of my externals ( not that I've done many ).

BVETMD has been a bit quiet lately I'm afraid due to lack of spare time, though production will be back up to strength after the summer all being well. I'm on with a couple of new projects, material gathering and thrash collecting is almost complete........

I'm not surprised at your observation about the front windows, Martin. The best resolution pics I have been working with include a non-typical (early??) front. I've put a small montage in here, the DMU on the left is the one I'm working from. You can see the windows are deeper than the other three more typical 101s. I will be making more than one front texture available, including the commoner ones.

No worries Gray, the one on the extreme left is a 108, the windscreens are much larger on those.
Have these in high res plus more if they are of use...

Glad you solved that mystery! And thanks for those nice fronts.
So looks like I will end up with a 108 and a 101 to play with before I've done Very Happy

I'm pleased there's so much interest in these period items. It's got to be a good thing!

Well, it's been interesting, but the DMU is a bit of a mongrel - I mixed up Cl.101 with Cl.108 bits. So back to the workshop and this time a more realistic 101 has emerged. A 108 will be for another day!
