UK Signalling -

So who wants to step up and provide a replacement?

If I recall correctly Anthony Bowden made a slightly ehanced set of UK signals for X-City South, and it's possible that (with suitable permisison) these could be used as a default UK signal set.

Shall I ask for his permission then?

"Any files within a "Bham_X-City_South\" folder, but *not* within a "CopyrightMaterial\" folder, can be considered public domain/unrestricted. If in doubt, please open any files you wish to re-use in a text editor, and read the header at the start of the file, which states whether the file has any copyright restrictions applied to it."

Taken from the Objects file readme in Bham_X-City_South, and as the BRsigs are not in a copyright folder, and contains no permissions info itself, why do you need to?

Also there arises the question of when is something said to be "in the public domain".

Copyrighted works may not be used for derivative works without permission from the copyright owner, while public domain works can be freely used for derivative works without permission. Artworks that are public domain may also be reproduced photographically or artistically or used as the basis of new, interpretive works.

So, as BR Signals are undoubtedly the patented works of British Railways Board, and those patents probably now belong to either Network Rail or the British Government, any artwork made of them could be claimed to be derivative works and thus free from restrictions.

I was under the impression that OpenBVE version of BRSigs was placed into the public domain when released by TSC. Having checked read me file this does indeed appear to be the case, see quote taken from developer readme.txt

These objects and textures are in the public domain and are free to reuse / redistribute / modify without permission.
