Station announcements

How can you have a station announcement sound like it is coming from the platform rather than the cab? The announce command seems to focus the sound on the driver and doppler command keeps repeating the sound.

You will need to review the Tack .Sta command documentation for that. :-)

That allows you to play a sound but it does not allow you to locate the sound in the same way that doppler does.

Interesting.
There's actually no way to do this at the minute.

What it wants is something like the following:
Track.AnnounceP FileName;X;Y;Speed

Assuming there the P stands for Positioned.

Would that work, or any better ideas on naming?
BVE5 has the same issue too.

Yes that would work. Doppler is OK except that it loops the sound by default. I guess you could create an announcement that played followed by a long silence so that it only looped after you were long gone from the station but it seems a waste of resources.

Minor waste of resources yeah.

Using one per station probably wouldn't hurt too much in the grand scheme of things, but I'd have to test that.

Other thoughts along these lines:
It strikes me that we need a timed announce too and / or a combination of the two.
Perhaps a XML sound link would be better. Musings on that one:
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<openBVE xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">
<WorldSound>
<StartTime>09.00</StartTime>
<Looped>false</Looped>
<Position>-5,1,0</Position>
<FileName>SoundEffect.wav</FileName>
<WorldSound>
</openBVE>

Place via something like
Code:
500, .SoundX fileName.xml

Any feedback on that sort of thing / whether we want time based control?

New and fancy commands are much more of a problem than extensions; If you forget to think of something, it's much harder to go back and add it later, as this breaks backwards compaiblity Razz

Chris,
Yes the xml option seems more versatile. I can't think of a timed announcement but other railway systems may have them. The station announcement I am thinking of is the one made as the train arrives at the station so it is triggered by the train's position. You could also have the option for random safety announcements not dependent on the train's position.

I think if you can add some sort of soundinterval command in which the user can set the amount of time they want to have of silence between the plays of the sound file.
