Order of postings

I couldn't find anything in FAQ's, so what I want to ask is, Can the posts in a thread be displayed in any other order? At present the default is to start with the first (earliest) post. But when the posts start to stretch over two, three, four . . . . .pages it becomes necessary to click additional buttons and have to wait for the pge to load, which is a pain on a slow connection. Some forum formats allow latest post to show at the beginning, sometimes set by user in"preferences" or whatever.

Is it possible to do? (Apologies if I've bin thick and missed something) DOH!

Bit of a technical problem, Derryck. Tried to post as attachment, but it seems they're too big to fit in the RJ45 socket.

what ever has happened here is making my preferences be the same, newer posts at the top of threads. how do i trun this off?

I do, but this is a global setting, so I cannot set it for one person differently than from the other. The conclusion is you and Graham going to talk about it into a ring. The winner defines the setting.

Older posts first please. This way the threads can be read in chronological order rather than back to front. After all it is easy enough to skip to the last page of a thread if you have already being following the thread.

I would submit that the majority of users following a thread as it develops have already seen the earliest posts. Given that they are looking for the latest update, and that threads are flaggged when updated, it is more logical that a hit on the thread brings up the latest entry. It will be a minority, if any, who will need to start and the end, so to speak, so it makes no sense whatever to make it less easy to view the oldest posts first.
It is unfortunate that the setting is global, from the point of not offering users the choice of order. I'm delighted with new order, which works better for me, particularly because with slow broadband I'm not waiting for pages to load which I don't need to read, before I can select what I'm looking for. Much more efficient.

Gray, have you noticed those little square icons when browsing the topics? They will take you directly to the page you want... so if you want the last one, just click the last square... in this case it's a square with "4", see in the attachment.

And one BIG PLUS - the PORTAL will take you right to the last page of the topic if you go via "latest topics".

Still prefer new order, let's see how the poll goes for the majority vote.
At present the portal isn't automatically the first point of contact, but iI take your point if it was.

Exactly Derryck. No need at all to scroll through pages. Another point about a slow connection the banner adverts tend to slow down page loading and a page such as mrknowitalls 350 class photos will slow it down even more. Could we not have a photo gallery to accomodate pictures like these.

You are right, but the commercials are being put automatically, it is something like a "tax" for free hosting... and the pictures on the portal are actually not that big... altogether around 250k if I am not mistaking.

Something funny going on here. Click on a subject in the latest topics section of the portal and it is taking you to the last page (4 of 4) instead of the first page (1 of 4). As for the pictures they are about 120k each with 10 on the page that is over 1 meg.

Can we not have this posting order as a per user preference setting not globally done. As I'd go as far as saying I cannot use the forums as they are now, it's like having to unlearn 33 years of reading top to bottom and front page to back page and may not come back unless it returns to normal sometime soon

Derryck seems certain it a global setting, so at the end of the day it will have to be one or the other. I hope it doesn't deter you from making your third ever visit here. I expect the results of the poll will determine the matter when everyone has had a chance to vote on it.

Thanks. Actually the size of 120k is not correct, on the portal, the "forum" pic has 53KB, "Knowledge base" has 33KB, "Links" has 29KB and the logo is 71KB "large". Sum that up yourself.

Sorry derryck you have misunderstood me or I did not explain very well. Take a look at the pictures on this page https://bveworldwide.forumotion.com/t77-bve-4-trainz in total they add upto about 1 meg.
Anyway never mind we shall see what the result of the poll is.
